ΣΤΕΦΑΝΟΣ O ΒΥΖΑΝΤΙΟΣ

Ήταν στα τελευταία του ο αββάς Στέφανος ο Βυζάντιος, που είχε χρηματίσει αρχειοφύλακας του στρατηγού Μαυριανού. Καθισμένοι πλάϊ του τον περιμέναμε πιά εγώ κι ο αββάς Θεοδόσιος, ο αφρικανός, επίσκοπος Βαβυλώνος. Τον διαβάζαμε τον 118ον ψαλμό, τον "άμωμο", όπως συνηθίζεται για τους ψυχορραγούντες, όταν ξαφνικά στρέφει εκείνος το βλέμμα του έντονα σε κάποιον που εμφανίστηκε μπροστά του και του λέγει με βαριά φωνή:
- Τι ήρθες εδώ; Γκρεμίσου στο σκότος το εξώτερο, Δεν έχεις δουλειά μαζί μου. Μερίς μου ο Κύριος.
Μόλις λοιπόν φτάσαμε να πούμε διαβάζοντας τον στίχο τούτον " Μερίς μου ει Κύριε", ο αββάς Στέφανος παρέδωσε το πνεύμα του στον Κύριο. Ψάξαμε για κανένα ρούχο να τον αλλάξουμε για την ταφή, μα δεν βρήκαμε. Και τι πλούτοι και τι δόξες είχε κάποτε...

Τελείται την ερχόμενη Κυριακή, 11 Σεπτεμβρίου 2011, το ετήσιο μνημόσυνο του μακαριστού Πάπα και Πατριάρχου Αλεξανδρείας και πάσης Αφρικής Πέτρου στον ιερό ναό Αγίου Σάββα Λευκωσίας. Της θείας Λειτουργίας και του Μνημοσύνου θα προστεί ο Πανιερώτατος Μητροπολίτης Κιτίου κ. Χρυσόστομος συμπαραστατούμενος από τον Σεβασμιώτατο Μητροπολίτη Ναυκράτιδος κ. Κύριλλο.

Fr. Ioann Okhlobystin's bid for presidency opposed by the Russian Orthodox Church

Moscow. Fr. Ioann Okhlobystin's plans to nominate himself for president in the 2012 polls have failed to win support from the Russian Orthodox Church.

"Both the Basis Social Concept of the Russian Orthodox Church and one of the documents passed by the 2011 Archbishop Council say that clerics cannot nominate their candidacies for elections to any representative bodies of power of any countries and at any levels," head of the Synodal Department for Church and Society Relations Archpriest Vsevolod Chaplin has told Interfax-Religion.

Naturally, this equally applies to the presidential election, he said, commenting on Okhlobystin's statement, made at the Interfax main office, that he was planning to run for the presidency.

Okhlobystin said that in order to go into politics, he needed "at least a tacit approval from the Church".

Father Vsevolod emphasized that exceptions from the rules forbidding priests to participate in elections could only be allowed in case of extreme necessity for the Church.

Once a demonized youth went to the skete of some Fathers in order to be cured by their prayers.
Out of humility, however, they fled. For much time, the unfortunate man suffered thus,
until a certain elder took pity on him, crossed him with a wooden cross he had on his belt, and cast out the evil spirit.

"Since you evict me from my abode," the spirit said, "I will enter you."

"Come," the elder courageously answered him.

So it is that the demon entered into him and tortured him for a full twelve years.
The holy one endured the struggle with fortitude, but fought against his enemy with superhuman fasting and unceasing prayer.
All of those years he never even once put food in his mouth, chewing rather a few date pits every evening
and swallowing only the juice from them.

Finally, conquered by the incessant struggle of the elder, the demon freed him.

"Why are you leaving?" the elder asked him. "No one is casting you out."

"Your fasting destroyed me," answered the demon, becoming invisible.

ΤΟ «ΚΑΘ’ ΟΜΟΙΩΣΙΝ» ΚΑΙ Η ΔΟΞΑ.

Ο Άγιος Διάδοχος Φωτικής (Β. Ἤπειρος) γράφει στα «Εκατόν Πρακτικά Κεφάλαιά» του τα εξής θεοφώτιστα:

«Όλοι οι άνθρωποι είμαστε πλασμένοι κατ᾽ εικόνα του Θεού. Το “καθ᾽ ομοίωσιν” όμως το έχουν μόνον εκείνοι, οι οποίοι με πολλήν αγάπην υποδούλωσαν την ελευθερία τους στον Θεόν. Γιατί όταν δεν ανήκουμε στους εαυτούς μας, τότε είμαστε όμοιοι με Εκείνον, που μας συμφιλίωσε με τον εαυτόν Του μέσω της αγάπης. Αυτό δεν μπορεί κανείς να το επιτύχη, αν δεν πείση την ψυχή του να μη δελεάζεται από την εύκολη δόξα του κόσμου τούτου».

The Press Office of the Romanian Patriarchate informs us: On 7 September 2011, the working session of the Standing Meeting of Saint Constantine and Helen decided to submit to the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church for approval the proclamation of the year 2013 as Homage Year of Saints Constantine and Helen, because in 2013 it is 1700 years since the issue of the Edict of Mediolan (313), by which the religious persecutions in the Roman Empire ceased.

Patriarch Kirill sympathizes with Angela Merkel over her father's death

Moscow, September 9, 

 Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia expressed his condolences to German Chancellor Angela Merkel over her father's death.

"Please, accept my sincere condolences over decease of your father, pastor Horst Kasner. His life fell on critical moments of the 20th century and it required much strength and firm faith. He was always guided by eternal Christian values that exceeded the vanity of this world," the Patriarch said in his message of condolences posted by his press service.

Protestant pastor Horst Kasner died at night on Saturday at the age of 85.

He was born in 1926 in Berlin. He studied theology in Hamburg University after World War II. In 1957 he moved to the town of Templin in 80 kilometers from the capital where he headed a college for pastors.

Η ΚΛΙΜΑΞ - ΛΟΓΟΣ ΕΒΔΟΜΟΣ- ΠΕΡΙ ΤΟΥ ΧΑΡΟΠΟΙΟΥ ΠΕΝΘΟΥΣ

Έμενε εδώ κάποιος μοναχός Στέφανος, ο οποίος είχε ασπασθή την ερημική και ησυχαστική ζωή. Αγωνίσθηκε πολλά έτη στην μοναχική παλαίστρα. Ήταν στολισμένος με νηστείες, και ιδιαιτέρως με δάκρυα και με άλλα ενάρετα κατορθώματα. Είχε το κελλί του στην κατάβασι του αγίου τούτου όρους, (κάτω από την Αγία Κορυφή), στο σημείο πού ευρίσκεται το σπήλαιο του Προφήτου Ηλιού.

Ambassador of Israel on a Visit to the Romanian Patriarchate

His Beatitude Daniel, Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church received His Excellency Mr. Dan Ben-Eliezer, Ambassador of Israel in Bucharest, in an audience at the Patriarchal Residence.

Mr. Ambassador thanked for reception and appreciated the very good relations between Romania and Israel, as well as between the Romanian Orthodox Church and the Jewish community in our country.

Η Εκκλησία τίμησε το Γενέσιο της Υπεραγίας Θεοτόκου

Με λαμπρότητα και κατάνυξη η Εκκλησία τίμησε το Γενέσιο της Υπεραγίας Θεοτόκου. Στον κατάμεστο από πιστούς πανηγυρίζοντα ιερό ναό Παναγίας Μακεδονιτίσσης, την Τετάρτη, 7 Σεπτεμβρίου 2011, τελέστηκε ο πανηγυρικός Εσπερινός χοροστατούντος του Μακαριωτάτου Αρχιεπισκόπου Κύπρου κ. κ. Χρυσοστόμου. Κατά τη διάρκεια του Εσπερινού έγινε και η λιτάνευση της προσφάτως ευρεθείσης, στον εν λόγω ιερό ναό, αρχαίας εικόνος της Κυρίας Θεοτόκου, η οποία στη συνέχεια παρατέθηκε για προσκύνηση από τους πιστούς. Η αρχαία αυτή ιερή Εικόνα, που τώρα βρίσκεται αναστηλωμένη στην εκκλησία της Παναγίας Μακεδονιτίσσης, συντηρήθηκε από το Κέντρο Συντηρήσεως  της Ιεράς Αρχιεπισκοπής Κύπρου.

Την επομένη μέρα, Πέμπτη 8 Σεπτεμβρίου, ανήμερα της εορτής, ο Μακαριώτατος Αρχιεπίσκοπος Κύπρου κ. κ. Χρυσόστομος λειτούργησε και κήρυξε στον πανηγυρίζοντα ιερό ναό Παναγίας Χρυσελεούσης, στο Στρόβολο, συμπαραστατούμενος από τον Θεοφιλέστατο Επίσκοπο Μεσαορίας κ. Γρηγόριο και τους ιερείς του ιερού ναού, και στην παρουσία του Δημάρχου Στροβόλου κ. Σάββα Ηλιοφώτου και πλήθους πιστών, οι οποίοι συνάχθηκαν για να τιμήσουν την Υπεραγία Θεοτόκο.

Number of Orthodox Christians, Muslims grows in Russia

Moscow, September 8, Interfax.

69% of the Russians define themselves as Orthodox Christians, and 5% say they are Muslims. No more than 1% are Catholics, Protestants, Judaists or followers of other religions, the Yury Levada analytical center told Interfax on Thursday.

The center polled 1,600 people in August.

The number of Orthodox Christians in the country has grown by 13%, while the number of Muslims has enlarged by 2% since 2007, the center said.

The number of non-believers reduced from 33% to 22%.

At the same time, 47% of the respondents admitted that they never went to church. Only 3% said they attended church services weekly, 7% did that monthly, 11% went to the church once a year, and 10% even more rarely.

The number of people who never attended church services dropped from 59% in 2007 to 47% in 2011, while the number of those attending church services weekly or monthly grew by 4% in the same period.

The number of baptized Christians enlarged from 76% to 86% since 2007, Levada Center said.

Meanwhile, the number of people who never make their communion dropped from 83% to 65%. Only 3% do that more or less regularly; and the percentage of those making communion several times a year is up, from 14% to 17%.
