On 9/11 Moscow Grand Mosque demolished

Moscow, September 12, Interfax - The historical building of the Moscow Grand Mosque was demolished in Moscow last week.

"Workers used special equipment to demolish the building of the historical mosque to the foundation," Albir Krganov, first deputy chairman of the Central Spiritual Directorate of Muslims and mufti of Moscow and the Central Region of Russia told Interfax-Religion.

Krganov said he was surprised that the day selected for the demolition of the mosque was September 11.

"A tragedy occurred in Moscow on the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks in the U.S." he said.

Earlier, some leaders of Islamic organizations in Russia criticized the plans of demolishing the Moscow Grand Mosque.

Η πρώτη επίσκεψη της Παναγίας μας στο Άγιο Όρος.

Όταν ανέβηκε η Θεομήτωρ στο όρος των Ελαιών για να προσευχηθεί, έγειραν τα δέντρα και την προσκύνησαν. Κατά την γενική αγιορείτικη παράδοση, η Κυρία Θεοτόκος με τον Άγιο Ιωάννη το Θεολόγο, ταξίδευε με πλοίο από την Παλαιστίνη στην Κύπρο, για να επισκεφτεί τον Άγιο Λάζαρο (τον αναστημένο εκ νεκρών). 'I escaped death a few times'

The horrors of Sept. 11 resurrected the long-buried childhood memories of the Greek Orthodox priest.

"What 9/11 reminded me was what I went through as a young person in Greece when the bombs were falling down on us, and it was a horrible experience," said the Very Rev. Constantine S. Bebis, pastor of St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Dartmouth. "I escaped death a few times in the city of Piraeus so I could understand what happened on 9/11. I remembered so vividly when I saw the sadness of those heroes, in particular the firemen. Italy bombed us, Germany bombed us and then the allies bombed us. Many of my neighbors got killed. How I survived was a miracle!"

A young teen during World War II, Bebis recalled a near date with death in January 1944.

"It was a beautiful Sunday, and I was supposed to visit a friend," he said. "But I was not feeling well. On that street I was supposed to walk that particular day, bombs fell."

He said that the Greek people were under the rule of the Ottoman Empire for 400 years.

"Many Greek people were beheaded or hanged for their Christian faith, so I was not really surprised what the fanatic Muslims tried to do to us here," he said sadly.

St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church was the only religious edifice destroyed in the attack on New York City.

"It was right in the heart of Manhattan where the Twin Towers were," he said. "The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America is trying to rebuild the church so we can worship there, but the New York Port Authority is giving us a hard time. I hope they will find some solution."

If Georgia maintains Christianity, the country will survive, Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia Ilia II said in his Sunday sermon at the Trinity Cathedral.

According to the Patriarch, the Georgian nation should remember that only the Orthodox belief, preserved by our ancestors, can bring salvation to the country. ‘If we preserve kindness, love, compassion, assistance and forgiveness, we will find salvation and Georgia will survive’, the Patriarch said.

SANTA CRUZ -- Members of Prophet Elias Greek Orthodox Church are busy planning this year's annual Greek Festival, an admission-free community event that highlights the thriving Greek culture present here in Santa Cruz.
This year marks the 31st annual celebration.
While this year's festival promises food, music and dancing, Prophet Elias church member Athena Wolfe said there will be at lease one visible difference.
