Kiev, September 27, Interfax - About 40 thousand pilgrims from 19 countries are expected to come to Ukrainian city Uman to celebrate Jewish New Year (Rosh Hashanah) on September 28-29, chief rabbi of Ukraine Yaakov Dov Bleich says.
Speaking at a press conference in Kiev he also cited data according to which about 100 thousand Hasidic pilgrims visit Rabbi Nachman's tomb in Uman yearly.
Bleich is outraged with actions of Ukrainian national patriotic organizations protesting against celebrating Rosh Hashanah in Uman. According to him, local residents earn much on pilgrimage.
Israeli police officers are expected to come to Ukraine to provide security there.
Annual Hassid pilgrimage cause protests of nationalists. Last Sunday police suppressed action initiated by the Svoboda nationalistic movement in Uman, about 60 people are detained.
