KNOXVILLE (WATE) – Knoxville Fire Department said Saint George Greek Orthodox Church was talking with inspectors about the possibility of having sprinklers installed before a fire broke out in the sanctuary. Church members and volunteers were busy all day Tuesday trying to salvage items from the sanctuary. Church members say they’ve been able to save many items and the clean-up is bitter sweet. They say it’s sad because of the damage but nice to see the community come together to lend a hand and help out. The volunteers and church members have been busy transforming the gym. The gym will be where service is held on Sunday.
The church, located at 4070 Kingston Pike had alarms and sprinklers in their gym and education areas, but not in the main sanctuary. Smoke and flames were reported coming from the sanctuary at around 7:00 a.m. Sunday. Crews were not able to get the fire under control until 8:45 p.m.
