Words of welcome at the meeting with
Pope Benedict XVI
in Freiburg on 24 September 2011

Εὐλογημένος ὁ ἐρχόμενος ἐν ὀνόματι Κυρίου! “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” (Mt 21,9) With these words from the Gospel according to Matthew I welcome Your Holiness in the name of the Orthodox Bishops’ Conference in Germany and thank You for making this meeting possible despite Your tight schedule. I would also like to express my gratitude to you, dear Archbishop Zollitsch, for inviting us and for giving us such a warm welcome. Allow me to extend to You the greetings
and the gratitude of the bishops of the Oriental Orthodox churches in Germany who are also present today.

It is nice that our meeting here in Freiburg takes place only a few steps away from the “Minster of our Dear Lady”. For us Orthodox Christians, the Mother of God is always with us, she always accompanies us on our way through time. This is especially true for us bishops. When we are ordained we are given the encolpion (also called panagia), the icon of the Mother of God as part of the episcopal insignia. The title of Panagia (the All-Holy) is used to describe the Mother of our Lord we are allowed to wear on our chest and in our heart. This is expressed by the term “encolpion”. All Orthodox bishops wear this Panagia as a visible sign of our veneration of the Mother of God and of our faithfulness to the Church. You once put it in the following words: “In keeping with biblical thought – the early Church had no difficulty recognizing in the Woman, on the one hand, Mary herself and, on the other hand, transcending time, the Church, bride and mother, in which the mystery of Mary spreads out into history.“1 From that point of view, we are still the Early Church and continue the special veneration of “our Dear Lady” even in this 21st
century; so it is not misogyny that our meeting today – in contrast to the ecumenical encounters of the last days – is a meeting of men only …
Your Holiness! You will be pleased to hear that quite a lot has happened since Your last visit in Germany – also in the Orthodox Church. Last year for instance, the Orthodox bishops’ conference in Germany was founded as a result of a decision taken by the Fourth Pre-Conciliar Pan-Orthodox Conference in Chambésy in June 2009. So it is thanks to the joint effort of the socalled mother churches that the longstanding cooperation in the “Commission of the Orthodox Church in Germany” (KOKiD), which has been existing until then was continued, and de facto as well as de jure appreciated. All Orthodox dioceses of our country now work together in this episcopal conference. So they implement the corresponding decision of Chambésy, which assigns to us and all the other episcopal conferences established at the same time the following mission: „The work and responsibility (…) will be the concern for manifesting the unity of Orthodoxy, the development of common action of all the Orthodox of each region to address the pastoral needs of Orthodox living in the region, a common representation of all Orthodox vis-à-vis other faiths and the wider society in the region, the
cultivation of theological scholarship and ecclesiastical education, etc.“ Of course, the present dioceses will continue to exist and to manage their own affairs; but from now on common interests and positions will be represented together for example on the issue of cooperation among Christians, media presence, religious instruction or a representation at the seat of the Federal Government and the Bundestag. The Orthodox bishops’ conference is still in its infancy, but it is viable and I am sure that with the help of God it will grow and flourish. 19 bishops are member of this episcopal conference – of which the diocesan bishops have come here today to welcome You.
